Our residents regularly go and enjoy time on our allotment weeding, watering, planting or just sitting in the peace and quiet with a picnic. It takes a lot of hard work to maintain and we are lucky that several staff enjoy getting their hands dirty and our Work Experience Lead, Karol co-ordinates any jobs that need doing and the layout of what to plant each year. There is always something to do and this month has been no different, with the harsh winds that we recently had one of our sheds got damaged so it needed to be removed. At the same time plants needed tending to, so it has been a busy time.
All the residents regardless of their ability are able to help with the caring of the allotment, some more than others but we have found it is a great way of building their self-esteem when they see what they can do. We also lower our own carbon footprint by producing a lot of our own vegetables for use in the home, so we have potatoes, onions, beans, and even grapes busy growing away.
